Motoring in Extreme Weather

The Staffa radial piston motor range is recognised throughout the world as one of the most reliable and robust serving the marine and off-shore industry.

Often especially specified by customers of original equipment manufacturers, their reputation is second to none in an industry where safety, reliability and efficiency are of primary concern.

Marine winch manufacturers in particular often fit the Staffa range as original equipment on their products which, when fitted to off shore fishing vessels, are frequently required to work around the clock in remote and hazardous sea conditions.

One such manufacturer is Petrel Engineering of South Africa who have been supplied with Staffa motors for over 20 years. Staffa motors were selected to power a range of marine winches suitable for all fishing methods up to and including nets of 500 fathoms long and 50 fathoms deep that required a line pull of up to 15 tonnes.

Petrel concedes that many of their customers in the relatively new North Sea markets have specified Staffa motors. Petrel has recently supplied one of its Staffa equipped winches to a Norwegian firm, an important development for the South African company as Norway is by far the largest market for fishing winches in the North Sea region.

Staffa motors are, however, already well represented in the North Sea region on Petrel fishing winches. For example, over fifty Staffa fitted fishing winches were ordered from Petrel at an exhibition in Iceland last year.

These winches were fitted with Staffa HMB030 and HMB045 motors that both offer a range of unique features and options. These include modular construction, hydrostatically balanced distributor valve and hydrostatically balanced con rod, along with a variety of shaft and porting options.

It's no wonder that Staffa motors continue to lead the field and why thousands are in active use world wide.
